Scientists have discovered a method to trigger self-destruction in cancer cells.

Researchers have developed a novel compound that prompts cancer cells to self-destruct by combining two specific proteins.

Here’s What We Know

One of the proteins, BCL6, usually promotes blood cancers by suppressing genes responsible for apoptosis, the programmed cell death process. However, when BCL6 is linked to another protein, CDK9, it triggers the activation of apoptosis genes, causing cancer cells to destroy themselves. This approach could transform cancer treatment by selectively targeting cancer cells while sparing healthy ones.

Currently, scientists are testing this compound in mice with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma to evaluate its effectiveness in live organisms. Positive results could pave the way for major breakthroughs in oncology.
