Google is preparing a significant enhancement to multitasking in Android 16, allowing users to open any app in a floating window.

Here's What We Know

This new feature, dubbed "bubble anything," was highlighted in the latest Android 15 QPR1 beta. It enables users to run any app in a floating window that remains visible above other applications, streamlining the process of switching between tasks.

Previously, the "bubbles API" introduced in Android 11 only allowed messaging apps to display messages in floating windows, which limited its functionality since many apps did not support this feature. Google is now testing the capability to enable any app to float, aiming to enhance multitasking, particularly on tablets.

The "bubble anything" feature will add a new "bubble" button to the context menu that appears when users long-press an app icon on the home screen. By tapping this button, users can open the app in a floating window.

While this feature has not yet been officially confirmed and could be subject to cancellation or changes, the anticipation surrounding "bubble anything" in Android 16 is certainly high.
