The US Department of State has authorized the sale of ATACMS and GMLRS missiles to the United Arab Emirates for a total of $1.2 billion.

What We Know

This information comes from the Security Cooperation Agency within the US Department of Defense, which oversees the provision of military equipment and weapons through intergovernmental agreements.

The US government believes that this system will enable the United Arab Emirates to more effectively address both current and emerging threats.

The United Arab Emirates has previously sought approval to purchase 1,554 GMLRS missiles and 203 ATACMS missiles, along with associated systems and services, from the United States.

These munitions are utilized by the US HIMARS and M270 missile systems.

Washington has already informed Congress of this decision, which has 30 days to review the potential deal and may choose to block it. The US Department of Defense has stated that the sale will not compromise US military capabilities.

If Congress does not oppose the proposed agreements, contractors and recipient countries can begin contract negotiations.
