Based on earlier leaks and rumors, Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is set to deliver a significant performance boost compared to its predecessor. Recent tests have showcased impressive results, but there are concerns regarding overheating and high power consumption.

Key Insights

Reports suggest there may be two versions of the chip: one with a maximum operating frequency of 4.09GHz and an overclocked variant reaching 4.32GHz. In Geekbench tests, the overclocked version scored 3,216 points in single-core performance and 10,051 points in multi-core, reflecting a 35% improvement in single-core and a 30% boost in multi-core performance compared to previous generations. Additionally, the Adreno 830 GPU excelled, supporting 4K resolution at 144Hz.

However, the overclocked variant consumes over 20W of power, leading to temperatures as high as 98.5°C. This raises concerns about thermal management and battery life in devices. To mitigate these issues, manufacturers like OnePlus and Xiaomi are planning to implement larger batteries and active cooling solutions. Until Qualcomm resolves the overheating concerns, the Snapdragon 8 Elite may face challenges in real-world applications, especially during demanding tasks.

The official unveiling of the chip is anticipated at the Snapdragon Summit from October 21 to 24.
