In October 2024, Google launched a new audio app called Recorder, set to be available on all Chromebooks with the ChromeOS 130 update. Some AI features will be exclusive to Chromebook Plus models, but basic functionalities like audio recording and speech-to-text will be accessible to all Chromebook users, regardless of the model.
Here's What We Know:
The app will allow audio recording and speech-to-text functionality without requiring a real-time internet connection. Users will need to download a model of around 100 MB for offline use.
The Recorder app features a user-friendly interface reminiscent of Pixel Recorder, fully tailored to the Material You design. Users can record audio directly from their device, search through transcripts, and adjust playback speed. The app also supports exporting both audio and text.
For Chromebook Plus owners, an additional feature is available—an AI-generated summary of recordings based on transcription. This feature provides a concise three-digit summary and suggests a title for the recording.
The ChromeOS 130 update will also introduce new enhancements for video calls, including a studio-quality microphone and appearance effects. The update is set to begin rolling out at the end of October.
